Item switching
Item switching is returning a different product than the one you shipped: cheaper colour, older model, counterfeit, or a lookalike from another brand. Without a delivery baseline, QC only sees “something in a box.”
Item switching (also called product swapping or return switching) is when the parcel that comes back is not the unit that went out. The customer keeps the valuable item and returns a lesser substitute.
It shows up in electronics (lower-spec or used units), beauty (empties or lookalikes), footwear (worn pair swapped for a wrong size), and fashion (cheaper colourway in the same style family).
Unlike empty-box fraud, something physical comes back. Weight and carton can look fine. Only identity checks (SKU, serial, colour, packaging authenticity) expose the switch.

Scan limit
Courier scans prove a parcel moved. They do not prove which SKU was inside
Logistics product design
Lookalike risk
Older models and cheaper lines often share carton dimensions with premium units
Electronics / appliance ops pattern
Double hit
You refund the premium unit and restock a lesser one you may not be able to sell
Margin impact for D2C
Build a checklist your night shift can run in under two minutes per disputed order.
Compare return serial to what was allocated or visible at delivery. Mismatch is a hard stop.
Colour, size, finish, and model year must match the Shopify line item, not “roughly the same product.”
Print quality, security seals, language variants, and insert cards often differ on swapped units.
Accounts with repeated “wrong item” claims on high-AOV electronics deserve mandatory dual video.
“Wrong item” reason codes collapse two stories into one: your mis-ship and their swap. If policy always refunds or reships on that code, switchers win by default.
Photo requirements help only if someone checks them before money moves. Many brands collect blurry stills and never compare to what left the warehouse.
Winning control: delivery video that shows the real unit, return video that shows identity marks, and a rule that replacements wait on verification.
The comparison is the product. Everything else is commentary.
Step 1
Unboxing clip shows model, colour, serial sticker, and seal.
Step 2
Customer films the same identifiers before pickup.
Step 3
Match SKU and serial. Flag lookalikes immediately.
Step 4
Reship only on proven mis-ship. Reject swaps with policy language and keep the record.
Vefri attaches delivery and return captures to the Shopify order so QC can compare identifiers without digging through WhatsApp forwards. Courier partners still run pickup. Your team still owns approve, hold, or reject.
Ask customers to hold the serial or barcode steady for two seconds. Ask them to pan colour and model text on the box. Switches fail when identity is forced into the frame.
If delivery video already showed a different serial, the debate ends. If you only have return video, you can still catch obvious wrong variants, but you argue harder about “what we shipped.”
Item switching is a deliberate swap of goods. Wrong-item returns may be honest mis-ships or swaps. Empty-box returns send little or no product back. Use the matching playbook for each pattern, and share one verification stack across all three.
Electronics: serials and seals first. Beauty: batch codes and fill levels. Fashion: colour and care-label SKUs. Footwear: size stamp and sole condition together (swap plus wear often travel as a pair).
